HOLD-DOWNS (aka HOLDOWNS)
Construction best practice indicates sill plate and walls to be anchored to the foundation wall. This is done with the use of hold-downs embedded into the home’s foundation at fixed spacing. A holdown or tie-down provides stability to the structure in the event of seismic movement, earthquake, etc. They make the structure resistant to turning, cracking finishes, water intrusion, ruptured plumbing and gas lines, collapse of the framing system, and helps to avoid injury of people and pets in the event of mishap.
